This place is serving delicious food at the moment. We’ve been a few times over the years and we were never blown away by the food. But we had friends visiting from overseas recently and decided to take them somewhere a bit different. So we really booked the Cherwell Boathouse for its location, with its calming riverside setting and it’s fun punting scene. But the food was just amazing. Everything on the menu was fab (I tried bits of everyone’s food just to make sure). Their wine list, for which they’ve won numerous awards, is exceptional .
I think its good value for the quality and standard of the food and drink. Price wise it’s no more expensive than other places nearby where we’ve had some pretty below average experiences. When the opportunity to choose a restaurant for a work dinner came up I had the privilege of dining there again last week. I thought this would be a good test to see if standards fell with a larger table. This was thankfully not the case. Our business guests were very pleased with everything from the service to the food and location so the high standard is consistent. Book it now for that special occasion. The punting is thrilling fun too. Better in the summer but on a sunny winters day it’s still lovely. We took the children to the botanic gardens nearby and then went for a punt on the river followed by lunch on the terrace at Magdalen College. Not as posh as it sounds – it’s basically sandwiches and soup from the college canteen, and the children enjoyed watching the goings and comings of the boats and punts from the terrace.
